Finding Happy

Today is Rev. Jeanette Glass’s memorial service. She died after a long battle with colon cancer. A month or so ago a friend of mine visited with her. She told me Rev. Jeanette told her to make sure she was doing what makes her happy. My girlfriend returned to me inspired and curious. She was inspired to do what the Rev. had offered - while she was curious how exactly she would do that.
Do what makes you happy. I’m curious what Rev. Jeanette meant, or is it as simple as it seems. I’m interested in what was not said. Did she live her life doing what made her happy, or was this advice filled with regret and a life gone too soon without enough happiness? Or, did she know something we do not, after having lived the life she did. As today is her funeral, I’d say none of that really matters at this point except what does -do what makes you “happy”- means personally for each one of us.
Today, I’d say I’m doing what makes me happy more than I ever have before. For years I didn’t truly know what made me happy. Maybe that was youth or neglect. Whatever the case, I believe I’m still learning what makes me truly happy. The fascinating thing is it doesn’t take much to make me happy. Although it seems at times it doesn’t take much to make me unhappy either.

The other day my husband called me while shopping for summer shirts for himself. Over the phone he declared he was going to step out of his fashion box and purchase some “trendy” shirts. That made me happy and excited to see what he deemed trendy. I spent the next couple of hours anxiously awaiting his return home so I could see his new shirts. He was right, he did step out of his box.
This magazine and my relationship with our co-creator, my best friend, also make me happy. I’m really happy creating and sharing a vision for something lovely and uplifting in the world. I’m happy God chose us for this particular project. It’s possible she and I came together to do just this. I’m also happy to be a mother, a wife and a ‘me’. Yes, I’m happy God made me just as I am. I think I rock.
So, what makes you happy? Think about it, feel it and then do it. Do what makes you happy. I bet you’ll make a whole lot of other folks happy in the process. Have a happy great weekend. And blessing to Rev. Jeanette Glass and her family during this very transitional time.
Peace and Blessings,
Monique Ruffin-James
